You were dead on yesterday when you said the greens were the problem. I have downloaded the Sierra Club environmental policy letter. It allows for no new oil refineries and no new well drilling. The policy would allow for the building of additional capacity at existing refineries.

While I agree that certain environmental activists have made it difficult for the powers that be to do their jobs (particularly when it comes to nuclear power), I personally believe that the fault rests more in the laps of the oil companies on the issue of drilling at home, since there are literally several hundred drilling permits which have been granted them around the country that have not been used. Why give them more permits when they're not utilizing the ones they have? I believe that even if you granted them new permits they would not use them because Big Oil does not make its money from drilling, they make it from distribution. Very few of the largest oil companies are in the business of drilling; even Exxon which had been a leader in the field has said that it is pulling away from if not eliminating its own production to focus primarily on distribution.
I believe Capitalism to be what has made this country grow to such fantastic heights, but there is a limit to what it can achieve with such a large, growing population and so very many competitors around the world now throwing their own government-subsidized hats into the ring. America faces some tough choices in the days ahead. It will be interesting to see whether she ebbs and flows with the wind like amber waves of grain in her attempt to stay the course or if she breaks under the continuous pressure of a global economy that is seemingly bent on flattening her house of cards so long and meticulously prepared and displayed before a jealous throng...my bet is that we will be compromising some freedoms for the sake of comfort and security...much like the rest of the world around us.
